What's on Repeat?

This section features a song that I listen to obsessively.
As of April 10, the song is Son of A Preacher Man. Sung by various artists but this one in particular.

Mince pies

Here's my contribution to the festivities.
Home made mince pies.
OOOH yes they are !

Anti-Matter (Set faces to stun !)

This excites me so much, it's beyond belief.
At last! The first step towards producing fuel for Starship Enterprise.

What's On Repeat ?

Ok. After a long period of no updates, here I roll.
What's On Repeat has changed.
You can now listen to Christine Ebersole singing Around the World from Grey Gardens.
An interesting story and most fabulous song. It's a shame she chooses to speak half of the song as the melody on the score is rather lush.
Enjoy...

News

I try to share what I find interesting in the news on Facebook. I thought I could share these on my blog too. Here's the most recent one.
This really excites me ! It's like The Big-Bang. But mini :)

A Walk on the Wirral Way

Finally.
An update. Here are some photos from a walk on the Wirral Way.
A sunny October day.
15 km of walking ended with marvellous ice cream.

More updates to follow.
Watch this space.
:)
It might even begin to snow on my blog.
Who knows?

Enjoy...

Climbing

I've taken up indoor climbing again. I go on a regular basis and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Below is a video tour of Awesome Walls here in Liverpool which is where I go climbing. It is created by and featured on Climbfind.com. I hope it will give you an idea about the climbing centre.

DarkScreenTime (DST) / KaranlikEkranSaati (KES)

This is a trial event. It stems from my irritation by our indirect interaction with the world through "the screen" and from my desire to see whether we could be encouraged to leave our screens behind to see, hear, talk to the world around us more directly, hence without using a screen. (I am fully aware that I'm promoting this through a screen. Moving on...)

The time allocated on Sunday is DarkScreenTime (DST).
How can I join?Just leave your screens alone on Sunday from 1 to 4 pm during DST.

Also leave your comments, share your thoughts on the facebook event page or here.

What counts as a screen?
-TV-Computer screen-Cinema-Digital Watch-Digital Camera-Mobile Phone Screen-Information Screens (hard to avoid, I know)-Billboard/Ad Screens (even harder to avoid)This list can be extended. Try to use this logic as honestly as possible: Is there a way to do this without the screen? (A simple example is my bike computer that tells me the distance I travel on my bike. I could, however, try and estimate it by the signs I see around me, or by using simple calculation to find out my average speed, or by simply trying to guess the distance. So a bike computer does count as a screen. Well, at least mine does.)

FAQs:
Q: Can I use my mobile phone to call a friend?
A: Yes. Because essentially you are not communicating through the screen. However, you may not screen your calls or use your mobile phone as a watch/clock.

Q: Can I text or surf the web on my phone?
A: No.

Q: Does my Ipod count as a screen?
A: Yes, if you are playing games, wathcing films, surfing the web etc. No, if you are listening to music. But ideally if you wanted to listen to music without having to go through a screen you could try and find an analogue radio, tune in, and listen. Or find a street musician etc.

Twitter

Yes. Yes. I know. There's no end to e-communication. I wasn't intending to get a twitter account. I had to get it to be able to use a screencast programme. (Screencast? Moi?) Anyhow.
I now Tweet. You will find a section to your right for my Twitter-box. The best thing about it is that I can update it with a text message therefore be prepared for more live updates. (Or don't actually. I know I'll hardly ever use it. Or maybe I will. Who knows?!)

Horses....

Dear all, below is a song that I couldn't stop listening today. I heard it on the radio in the morning and fell in love with it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I didn't want to get rid of "I don't want to know" from the "What's on Repeat" box so this song comes as a post.

World Theatre Day

Dear All,
This is a message from Lynn Nottage, Pulitzer winning playwright, for the World Theatre Day (27 March). Her message comes as an alternative or an addition to Dame Judi Dench's international message. I have to admit that this message touched me more than Dame Judi's.
Please take 5 minutes to read it. I hope it will give you an insight to why I've always loved theatre and why I can't live without it.
Here's what hits me the most in sentiment.
"...[We must be] approaching our work not as journalists, but as fabulators, storytellers, breaking rules to help reimagine the world. We must be truthful, while spinning yarns. It is the paradox of our creative process that gives us access to places we dare not go in our everyday lives. It emboldens us to ask difficult questions about war, race, religion, poverty, love and hatred..."
Please follow the link below for the entire speech.
With love,
Onur

Film acting

Here's all you need to know about acting for the camera and film making.
Truly informative. (With thanks to Dr. Ipek B.)

I don't want to know

If summer is no longer carefree,
If children are no longer singing,
If people are no longer happy,
Then I don't want to know.

Let me hide ev'ry truth from my eyes with the back of my hand,
Let me live in a world full of lies with my head in the sand.

from Jerry Herman's "Dear World"

Food for thought...

"Hell was the invention of money-makers; its purpose was to divert the attention of the poor from their present afflictions. Firstly with the repeated threat that the might be very much worse off. And secondly with the promise, for the obedient and loyal that, in another life, in the Kingdom of God, they would all enjoy what wealth can buy in this world and more.
[...]
The inflictions of today have gone further. No need to evoke a Hell in the afterlife. A hell for the excluded is being constructed in this one, announceing the same thing: that only wealth can make sense of being alive."

from "From A to X" by John Berger(p117)

with thanks to John and Emma...

Moving

Dear all, i am in the process of moving from Glasgow to Liverpool, hence the scarcity of updates. But take a look what's on repeat (the box to the right) on journeys between the two cities . . .
